Studying a Pioneer's Life During a Trip to Silver Dollar City

I was fortunate enough to get to take a great trip with my dear friend Caroline. She lives with Lissy's mom, Grammy, but Caroline's real time period is 1812. Caroline and I had become interested in the pioneer days and started researching it to learn more. In fact the trip we took was part of our research. We went to Silver Dollar City which is an amusement park in Branson, Missouri. The park is all pioneer themed and feels like you have traveled back in time.  A few years ago Lissy went there with Kirsten and took some nice photos. You can see them and learn more about the park by clicking HERE to view that post written by Lissy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyhow, Caroline and I had traveled about three and a half hours by car with Lissy and Grammy from Kansas City to Branson.  At some points I grew really impatient and I felt like the drive would never end. I was just anxious to get there and begin the fun.
Once we finally got to our hotel to check in we were able to refresh  ourselves and plan our research at the park. Caroline has the American Doll version of Kirsten and brought her along. She also brought Kirsten's story books. We read the first couple of chapters and soon realized Kirsten had to travel about six weeks to America from Sweden in a cargo ship. It made our measly 3.5 hour trip to Branson seem a lot better!
The worst part is she had to say good bye to loved ones and could only bring with her the things she could fit into a trunk.
 I found this terrific book at the library called Welcome to Kirsten's World. It tells all about what Kirsten's time period was like and how the pioneers lived. We used this book and Kirsten's story books for most of our research.
After we read and rested a little we were ready to put in a few hours at the amusement park.
When you get into the main part of Silver Dollar City it is like an old fashioned town. Caroline and I imagined how excited Kirsten must have been to travel into town from her family farm. We really liked the General Story especially the candy display! We learned from the book that a general store was usually the first business in a frontier town and it is where everyone bought or traded what they needed. The general store would even be where they would pick up mail.
We also got to see a couple getting married at Silver Dollar City's tiny chapel. So romantic! There was a whole page in our book that talked about pioneer weddings so this was a cool connection! We read that most weddings on the frontier took place in the winter when they didn't have as much work to get done. And guess what!... in Kisten's Swedish culture the bride would be crowned queen for the whole day of her wedding!
My favorite part of the trip was seeing the little farm in the park. They had baby goats and a miniature horse to pet! I loved that sweet horse so much! Her name was Cotton! The pioneers on the frontier had a lot to do each day to maintain their farms or homesteads. They had chores such as making soap, watching the fire, cleaning the outhouse, spinning wool to yarn, churning milk to cream and butter, hauling water, watering flowers, harvesting crops, keeping track of the farm animals, plowing fields, and so on!
Before the pioneers had farms and crops to keep up with they had to build their homes and barns. Caroline and I thought it was really interesting how people like Kirsten built their homes from logs. It was a long time consuming project that started by clearing out trees and stumps from the land, then preparing the logs, then lifting them into the frame and walls of the cabin. Once the logs were in place and roof was on the women and children would  fill the cracks with mud. At Silver Dollar City we saw a man demonstrating how pioneers would have cut the logs to build their houses with. I was exhausted just watching him!
When we got back to the hotel we were pretty tired from all the excitement of the park and traveling!
We fell right to sleep and dreamt about our pioneer friend.
The next morning we felt energized and ready to experience another pioneer day!
We started with some hot chocolate and biscuits in bed!
The day before we were pretty impressed by the log cabin making so it was even more exciting for us when we got to see a real log cabin at Silver Dollar City. We imagined Kirsten's home to be pretty similar. But did you know that some pioneers built homes out of sod (or mud) bricks. Those types of homes were called soddies.
With all the difficult labor that had to be done it's hard to imagine that there was time for any fun but they made time for childhood activities too. We took our picture in front of the one room school house that would have been just like the school Kirsten went to. In her time period students only went to school in the winter and summer because they had less work to do then, rather than in the spring and fall when their families needed them home all day to help.
We did so many other fantastic things but I couldn't get photos of everything, sometimes you just have to live in the moment and not worry about capturing a photo of it.
Overall we learned a lot about this time period and would really encourage you to learn something new about a past time period as well. You might find some pretty cool things to inspire you or to connect with!
We had such a nice trip, the weather was perfect, the fall leaves and Ozark mountains were gorgeous, and most of all the company was lovely :)
We were pretty sad when we had to pack up our things and leave the hotel. But we have awesome memories, photos, and souvenirs to remember the trip by.
By the way Caroline got a beautiful turquoise leather journal handmade by an artist in the park. I got a stuffy of AppleJack, my favorite My Little Pony, who reminded me of the miniature horse, Cotton, who we meet in the farm. And Grammy, who is the most generous lady ever, bought me a trinket box with horses painted on it; it was also handmade by an artist in the park.
Is there a time period that you would like to know more about? If you could live in any time period what would it be?
Halloween Decorating and Movie Marathon
Hey friends! We are getting so excited for Halloween around here!
Friday afternoon I picked up some treats and checked out some fun Halloween movies from the library. When I got home I was greeted by Tatlo, so I knew Kaya had gotten home from school.
"Kaya," I called out.
"I'm up here,” I heard her calling from the loft hangout room.
     "Hey Kaya watcha doing?" I asked after climbing up to the loft.
     "I'm making a fall decoration for Lissy's classroom. Isn't this such a cute little squirrel!"
     "So cute! I bet all of Lissy's students are getting so excited for Halloween."
      "Actually, Lissy's school is very culturally diverse and many of her students do not celebrate Halloween," she replied.
     I was pretty surprised by that and asked her to explain more about it. She went on to tell me that many of them choose not to celebrate the holiday because of religious beliefs or cultural differences. In some places around the world Halloween is a dangerous night of crime, not a fun night of trick-or-treating like it is in America. She finished explaining then said, "we are lucky to get to live in a country were we are free to make choices about what holidays we want to celebrate. Likewise, we are lucky because we live in a community that we can celebrate fun holidays safely." Kaya is a very smart girl; she helps me to see things differently and to keep an open mind.
     "Felicity, I can tell you are getting excited for Halloween, you have already started decorating!"
     "Yea, SO EXCITED! I wanted to get all the decorations up before the other girls got here so we can have a Halloween movie marathon weekend! Do you want to help me finish decorating?" I asked.
      "SOUNDS FUN!" She replied as she jumped up off the beanbag chair.
We finished what I started in mine and Molly's space.
Then we moved on to the living room.
Then we finished up by doing Samantha's, Rebecca's, Kirsten's, and Addy's space.
If you want to get a closer look at some of our decorations you can see them in a previous post. Click HERE to go to that post.
Once we got all the decorations up we were so pleased with our hard work that we were ready to celebrate!
"Yes! We got it all done before the other girls got here!" exclaimed Kaya. "They will be so surprised!"
"We make a good team, Kaya! High Five!!"
"Now let's go set out the movie treats!!"
"Wow! Felicity you got all the good stuff!... Popcorn, candy, and cookies...this is going to be the best movie marathon weekend ever!"
And it was! We watched so many good movies and ate until our bellies ached! One of my favorite Halloween movies is Hocus Pocus have you seen it? We also watched some old Halloween shows on YouTube. Here are a few links to some of them:
Do you celebrate Halloween?
If so are there any Halloween movies that you enjoy watching?
TGIF!
Hi guys I'm playing with my paper doll of Isabelle which I got in a Happy Meal from McDonalds.
I really like Isabelle. I wish I could dance like her!
 We just watched her movie. Have you seen it? It's so good! You can watch it on YouTube. If you click HERE and it will take you to the movie.
I really want to show you what I made for my new Julie doll!
Look! She has her own room under my loft bed!
 I kept the box she came in and covered it with vintage fabric I brought back with me after time traveling to the 1970s.
And look at this cool mini Volkswagen Beetle I found! It reminds me of the blue one you can get for Julie in her Car Wash Set.
Isn't this just the perfect space for my little 70s girl!?!
 Hey I think I heard Kaya get home! During the week Kaya lives at the school where Lissy teaches. I'm always excited for the weekend so she can come home and play with me!
Kaya, I'm back here in my room...
Whoa Tatlo, thanks for all the kisses and love!
Hey Felicity! Yeah Tatlo and I have been very excited to see you!
So Kaya, how was your week at school with Lissy?
(I love hearing about all the fun things Kaya gets to do at school)
Super good, guess what I got to meet a new friend, her name is Cora! Lissy took a photo of us, wanna see it!?
Cora lives with one of Lissy's students named Bella and Cora looks exactly like Bella!
That's awesome Kaya, she is very pretty! Look I got a new friend too! I bought Julie! Would you like to play dolls with me?
COOL! Of course I want to play! I'll get my AG doll!
TGIF!
Do you have any fun plans for this weekend?
I GOT JULIE!!
I'M SO EXCITED! I'M SO EXCITED!
I went to the AG Place to see the new Beforever line and guess what I got a NEW DOLL!!!
I picked Julie! Throughout all of my time traveling I've gotten to see a lot of cool time periods and one of my favorites is the 1970s. I loved how colorful everything was and I loved that it was finally really becoming acceptable for girls to do and wear boyish things.
 Look how pretty and bright she is! QUICK!... Let's take her out!
 I'm going to start reading her book today... From what I've heard, Julie is going to be my kind of girl! It's so cool to think she lived 200 years after my time period but we still have so much in common!
Wow! I love her outfit, it's so cool! I think I will save my money and get the matching outfit so I can look this awesome!
I looooove her long silky hair!
 I could brush her hair and play with it all day!!
I also have the AG doll version of my best friend from back home in 1775, Elizabeth. She is very happy to have some one to have a tea party with now.
 Tea for two!! HeHeHe... Aren't dolls so fun!
 I love my AG dolls so much! They fill me with so much joy!!
 Are you a big AG fan too?
Which dolls do you have?
What do you think of the new Beforever line?
Lissy and  I are really sad they took out the illustrations and the "Looking Back" section at the end of the books. Otherwise, we think there are some pretty cool changes for the Historical Dolls.
Felicity Freely Takes Over
HEY FRIENDS!
Guess what I have taken over!!
If you are new to this blog you might not realize that it has just gone through some major changes.
It use to be run by Lissy, (she is my grown up friend who I live with) but now I have taken over the blog!!!
Since Lissy is a grown up she's gotten very busy doing boring grown up things and asked if I might be able to help her with our blog. I was more than happy to help because I love to take photos and write.
So let me start by telling you a little bit more about me. My name is Felicity Merriman but my friends call me Lissie just like "Lissy" my grown up friend but I spell it with an "ie" and she spells it with a "y".
I actually live in Virginia during 1775, however, I have a secret. I am able to time travel, but... that's a story for another day.
...any ways...
Back home there is a lot of scary stuff happening between us and the British so my parents thought it would be safer for me to live here with Lissy. Besides, I like it better in the future because there is so much cool technology, fun clothes, and I can freely be myself. So I travel back in time to visit my friends, family, and my horse Penny now and then, but I spend most of my time here in the future with Lissy and the other girls that live with her.
As you can probably guess I have a very exciting life with lots of adventures and I'm so excited to be able to tell you all about them here on my blog. Speaking of which I better get to work! I already have several post started!
Oh, and if you are someone who has been following us for a while, don't worry Lissy's other girls, are still here too and I will be writing about them as well. You can still see all the old posts that Lissy wrote in the archives in the sidebar.
TTYL!! :)
A Note from Lissy
I was playing in the woods back home in Virgina, year 1775, when I noticed a letter addressed to me at the foot of a tree.
I knew right away who it was from because this wasn't an ordinary tree. This tree is my portal for time traveling and sometimes Lissy and I send letters through it to each other.
I opened the envelop to find lovely stationary featuring a  beautiful portrait of me and inside it a photo of a young Lissy.
The letter was rather lengthy but I knew it was important because on the back of the envelop Lissy wrote "SHARE ON THE BLOG".
I read the letter word for word then knew what I needed to do next. It was time for me to start writing for the blog.
 I went straight home to my Windsor writing chair and took out my quill and inkwell. I thought to myself, When I get back to the future... And my computer... I will copy Lissy's letter onto its own tab on the blog.
You can read Lissy's letter by opening the tab above labeled "A Note from Lissy".
Lissy recently asked if I would be whiling to help her keep up this blog. After reading this letter I am honored and humbled to be the one to take on a new chapter for this blog, formerly known as
lissy will never grow up.
Just wanted to say...
Hey y'all!
     I just wanted to say a few things :)
So, if you are someone who has been following me for a while you may have noticed my decrease in new posts. It's sad but true. I wanted to reassure my readers and followers that I am still completely in love with AG and
I WILL NOT STOP POSTING ON MY BLOG!!
Yes, right now they are a lesser priority but they are happily set up in my bedroom, and patiently waiting for my next creative urge. My mom is still regularly redressing, posing, and photographing her dolls. Once she's got her Pinterest board full of her photos I'll post a link so you can see how awesome her photos are... she is quite good at it really!
So for now I wanted you to see my lovely little darlings in their natural habitat ;) I love them so much and they bring me joy even when I'm not playing with them or photographing them.
 Thank you for viewing/reading; it means so much to me! I love that there are other people out there with this same quirky passion for dolls... especially my fellow adult doll collectors. :) Please be patient with me and I promise there are many more great things coming here at "Lissy Will Never Grow Up"
LUVS Y'ALL!
